How to play
Just before the start of the rally, at flag-off, we will give you 3 most important papers of the rally - Tulip in Braille, Speed chart & Time Control Card. Let me explain to you about each of these in detail.
Tulip
Example: Typical Tulip Like this will be read to you by the blind navigator

Brief Description Remarks
1. 0.00 You begin here at BPA, take a left turn towards Helmet cross road
2. 0.60 Take right turn towards Vijay cross roads.
3. 1.10 Cross road ahead go straight
4. 1.40 Cross road - take left turn towards menagar fire station, keeping Barista on your right
First.
The route is described in a format which is technically known as Tulip. The Tulip will have milestone, description/landmarks and instruction on the directions to be followed. This Tulip in your case is written in Braille and directions will be read out to you by the Blind Navigator.

Please follow the visual clues and km. reading closely to ensure that you are on the right route.
Car Rally for the Blind
The distance shown in the chart is from the start point. If your car has a trip meter, set the trip meter to zero exactly at flag off point. If your car does not have one, then you will have to keep on subtracting the current kms. from starting kms. There can be variation up to about 200 to 300 meters (0.2 to 0.3 Kms.) from vehicle to vehicle for any given description. While we have tried to give you best possible description, in absence of any description, take the most obvious road.

Please follow the route as mentioned in the 'Tulip' - the route chart given to your navigator in Braille.

Speed Chart:
e.g. -

The average speed required between two points is 40 km/hr. The distance to be covered is 10 kms. then you have not only to maintain average speed of 40 kms/hr. but continuously drive around that speed. You have to cover the distance in 15 minutes (10/40 X 60 mins) and each km should be covered in 1 minute 30 seconds.
Speed Chart: - Points based on TSD
The performance of a participant is measured on T S D (Time - speed - Distance) method.

The route is divided into segments. Each segment is having an average speed which has to be achieved by the rallyist to avoid getting penalty points.

Remember, while getting late by a minute gets you 1 penalty point, reaching early gets you 3 penalty points. So don't race to your destination..

Calculate your travel speed as shown in the example and have some one keep an eye on your speedometer, trip meter and watch simultaneously.

Rules

You are not allowed to reverse on the rally route. A participant can not bring the vehicle to a dead stop other than at the T.C point. You can earn negative points for violating these rules The winner is the one with the minimum negative points.

At the T.C. Point, hit the rope and park your car 10 mtrs. ahead of the rope. Your companion should get down and go to the marshall. The time noted is the one when the front wheel of your car hits the rope..

The driver should ask the navigator for the next 2 or 3 points mentioned in the Tulip so he is prepared for the turn or caution. If possible, ask your companion to write down the instruction from the navigator so that it becomes easier to repeat the instruction.

CautionPlease observe the speed limit and be gentle on the turnings and on the bump. It may be very tempting to drive fast on a dirt track and many rallyists get carried away. Remember, the navigator is not used to fast moving vehicles and may suffer from motion sickness.

Please be very careful when approaching a village. They are not used to the fast moving vehicles and even with an expert driver; accidents are very common in such places. Go extremely slow at such places.

Check list
  • Hard clip board to help you write while in motion, Pen
  • Calculator
  • Watch with a second hand or a digital watch
  • First aid box
  • Check the tyre pressure of all vehicles as well as Spare tyre.
  • Jack with handle
  • Enough Petrol in the vehicle.

TIPS to Win

Make sure you pass all time check points. If you have missed one, better to go back without reversing and pass the TC point. Missing a TC point will be a very costly mistake.

Do not try to compensate for being early or late at any TC point. Remember, the penalty points are given from a TC point to another one and not on your overall speed.

Always follow carefully what your navigator reads. DO NOT follow other participant. He/she may be lost or they may be on a different part of the route but on the same road.
Most Imp. Tip to Win
Difference between Time Control point (TC) and Speed Chart

Suppose your speed chart is showing an average speed of 30 kms between 11.1 and 20.1 km, a Time control point could be anywhere along the route and it is not mentioned in the Tulip. You have to visually search for it along the route
Difference between TC point and speed chart
Assume that there is a TC point at 15.1 kms and you have reached there 2 minutes late ie you reached in 12 minutes instead of required 10 minutes

Donot try to compensate the 2 minutes. Follow the remainder of the section of speed chart ie 15.1 to 20.1 at the average speed of 30 kms per hour and then follow the speed as per the next section of the speed chart
